AB Art Space presents an exciting new exhibition, which effectively shifts the Galway art scene up a gear.

With Isabel Nolan (one of the Irish artists chosen for the Venice Biennale 2005), Joanne McGonigal, and Si Schroeder providing a musical strand we have a unique glimpse of a vibrant network of aesthetically disparate yet culturally linked work; a ‘community’ of artistic activity.

All three artists engage in a private investigative process with their chosen medium. They embrace the tentative and elliptical rather than a notion of aggressive originality, displaying a new level of confidence which comes from work which has nothing to prove, no big battles to win, yet which has the intellectual assuredness of mature interaction with their medium. Through their work Hart makes a commitment to an intuitive kind of curating based on an exploration of alternative forms of ‘making art’ which inevitably leads to new and interesting methodologies.

Isabel Nolan, an artist known for her eclecticism, fosters ambiguity and intimacy in her work, struggling with a delicate hand through a labyrinth of fragmented narratives. In the process she has sought to represent through various means - pencil drawings, painting text, video - ideas relating to intimacy and isolation but through a post-humanist lens which allows for an intellectual engagement with emotion and challenges the sentimental and the clichéd.

McGonigal, along with Nolan, brings a penetrating intelligence to her work. Both have shown internationally and both have been involved in important curatorial projects. McGonigal could be seen as an iconoclast of Minimalism but her iconoclasm is of a philosophical rather than destructive nature. She takes on the forms created by the ‘Big Guns’ of that movement, Donald Judd and Dan Flavin, and interrogates their preoccupation with Surface and Line.

She explores what Merleau-Ponty has described as “the gap between knowledge and experience, between geometry and presence”. Lines as mark-making, as trajectories which infiltrate the vocabulary of both Modernism and Minimalism, and which engage in a dialogue with the discipline of a chosen economy of means, are her favoured mode of expression.

Si Schroeder has developed a huge reputation and almost cult following in Dublin, London and Berlin. Hi sonic experiments combine the lyrical and the technological to create mesmerizing soundscapes. Schroeder could be described as a sound collector; the works that he will present in AB Arts Space are sonic sketches, un manipulated musical ideas that are presented to the audience raw and immediate. Psychedelia and sixties folk blend osmotically with electronic sounds to create mood enhancing, sublime samples.AB is delighted and privileged to have Schroeder compose two new songs for an exclusive 7 inch produced for this show.

The show has been curated by Russell Hart, formerly director of the Catalyst Art Centre in Belfast and employed by IMMA before moving to Galway.
